The Humberstar

Halldór smárason and Adelle Stripe

HALLDÓR SMÁRASON & ADELLE STRIPE

Having worked with Icelandic composer Halldór Smárason on the successful EU funded programme Moving Classic, Einkofi Production facilitated an introduction between him and English writer and poet Adelle Stripe.  Their first collaboration, Beyond The Silverpit, was well received at the Enlighten Light Festival in Manchester 2015 so we were excited to get them to work together on a new commission for Hull 2017 UK Capital of Culture, North Atlantic Flux.  The result was the amazing piece The Humber Star.

‘The Humber Star’ is part of a body of work that responds to the tempestuous nature and savage beauty of the North Sea. Inspired by the lives of women in seafaring communities it tells the story of Mary Mudd, a resident of St. Andrew’s Terrace who lost her husband in the great December storm of 1894.

Celebrating the culture and legends of Hessle Rd in the 19th Century, this new work draws on archival material, oral history and local traditions gathered from the communities that lived there. Set to a breathtaking original score by Icelandic Composer Halldór Smárason and performance by Sinfonia UK and read by Vicky Foster.
